Mahathir is desperate to remove the current Prime Minister

Mahathir Mohamad breathes on the neck of the current Prime Minister of Malaysia Muhiddin Yassin. Realizing the opportunity, he also pinched Yasin's ear. Mahathir explained that even though he is 95 years old, he has not yet left the field of politics. He is also working hard to return to power.

Mahathir Mohamad resigned as Malaysia's prime minister in February. This led to the fall of the Pakatan Harapan alliance-led government. At that time, Mahathir's own party also broke up in Bersatu. Muhidin Yasin went out. He formed a new alliance with the United Malays National Organization (UMNO). The UMNO is now the political party of former Prime Minister Najib Razak, who is accused of corruption.

At that time, the main reason for Mahathir's resignation was his disagreement with Anwar Ibrahim, who wanted to be the Prime Minister. Anwar wanted to be the Prime Minister, Mahathir had promised to do so before the 2016 elections. But after two years, he did not want to make Anwar the Prime Minister. And that is why the Pakatan Harapan alliance broke up. On that occasion, the Prime Minister broke away from Mahathir's own political party, Muhiddin Yasin's party. In this case, however, Yasin also got the favor of the Sultan of the country.

Mahathir, however, did not sprain even though he broke down. He wanted to bring a no-confidence motion in Parliament. Yassin was challenged to prove his majority. The incumbent Prime Minister tactfully avoided it and closed parliament for about five months on the pretext of the coronavirus epidemic. Critics say it was difficult for Yassin to prove his majority in parliament at that very moment. So this is the timing strategy. Finally, on July 13, Yassin proposed a change of speaker in parliament.

Yes, Muhinuddin Yassin won the vote on this proposal. However, the victory was only two votes! Out of 222 lawmakers, 111 voted for Yassin. There were 109 people in the opposition. One of the other two was missing. Another speaker could not vote because he was presiding over the change meeting. Now understand, what would have happened if there had been a vote in Parliament in February or March?

Analysts say the new prime minister had the opportunity to keep parliament closed for so long in favor of the sultan. The main purpose was to make his team heavy. But in the July 13 vote, it is clear that the work was not done properly. As a result, Yassin's government is now on the brink of collapse. There is a risk of collapse at any moment.

In an article published in The Diplomat, Yassin said he wanted to change the speaker as soon as parliament opened, as he could not make his party heavier. So that even if Mahathir brings a motion of no confidence, it can be stopped. That is why trustworthy people have been appointed instead of neutral speakers. As a result, if a no-confidence motion is received, it can be rejected through the speaker.

James Chin, director of the Asia Institute at the University of Tasmania in Australia, says the results show that the two sides are very close in terms of numbers. As a result, Muhsin Yassin's government will not be stable. There is a risk of collapse.

The British magazine The Economist says that since coming to power in February, Muhsin Yassin has gradually formed a huge cabinet. Yassin's 70-member cabinet has been named Malaysia's largest ever. In other words, 80 of the 111 pro-legislators are ministers! The rest got the posts of chairman or director in various government companies. However, the Malaysian government could not take any action in the coronavirus epidemic. On the contrary, there have been allegations of gross injustice against migrant workers.

Meanwhile, the Nikkei Asian Review says political tensions and instability are having an impact on the Malaysian economy. Interest rates on local currencies have fallen to record levels in the country. Even during the global economic crisis of 2009, interest rates did not fall so much. There is coronavirus-related economic stagnation. Total exports from the country have declined by 25 per cent over the previous year. But the government of Muhidin Yasin is not giving financial incentives in that proportion. As a result, the economic crisis in Malaysia is deepening day by day.

Mahathir Mohammad

In exactly such a situation, Mahathir Mohammad raised his voice again. In an interview with the Asia Times, he said Yassin's government was illegitimate. It has risen and fallen to give a clean chit to corrupt people like Najib Razak. Because, the current government will not last a single day without the support of Najib's UMNO party. So Yasin has to protect Najib if he wants to survive.

According to Mahathir, he hired professionals in government-controlled companies and businesses. This step was taken to reduce corruption. Now that Yassin has come to power, he is removing all professionals and placing politicians there. As a result, the path of corruption is getting easier.

According to a CNBC analysis, Mahathir is desperate to remove the current government from power. Initially, he wanted to be prime minister again. But now Anwar Ibrahim's pole is strong in the opposition alliance Pakatan Harapan. So Mahathir's offer to become the Prime Minister did not get water. However, Mahathir did not give up, he came up with a new plan.

Analysts say that since Muhsin Yassin has installed a new speaker in parliament, Mahathir now has no choice but to wait for the election. Mahathir also understands that. So he is thinking about the election and the vote. He recently proposed Shafi Apadal as the next prime minister. According to Mahathir, Anwar Ibrahim's popularity among the country's majority Malay community has waned. That is why he thinks that Shafi Apadal is a worthy leader. Shafi Apadal is the Chief Minister of Sabah State in East Malaysia. Critics say Mahathir actually wants to appoint a man of his choice as prime minister, leaving the key to power in his hands.

The idea is that since Muhsin Yassin's support in parliament is not strong enough, there could be a chance of a by-election. According to a report in the Malay Mail, Mahathir Mohamad is also considering forming a new political party. In a recent interview, Mahathir said his party had broken up because of Muhsin Yassin. Instead of choosing a broken party, he is thinking of bringing in a new party with a new name. He also made it clear that he would not hesitate to form a new team if necessary.

Thus, the political situation in Malaysia is becoming more complicated day by day. Mahathir Mohammad is the oldest player on the field. He has turned 95 this month. Mahathir became the Prime Minister of the country for the second time after coming to the quota of the nineties. Who can say that he will not show magic in his old bones again!
